Cor Maher, RIP - a Guard of honour will be held by Club members (requiem mass at 12pm)

It is with great sadness and regret that Tyrrellspass GAA Football Club record the passing of Cornelius Maher, known to all as Cor.

Son of founder member and first Club Treasurer, the late Tom Maher, Cor went on to play football for Tyrrellspass for a number of years. He also excelled at his other great passion of hurling and was part of the St Brigid’s team which won a famous three in a row of Senior Hurling Championships, 1970, 71 & 72.

During the 1960’s Cor became involved with the Committees of Tyrrellspass GAA and was a regular representative as a County Board Delegate and attended various Westmeath GAA conventions.

Cor was part of the first Tyrrellspass side to reach a championship final, when we reached the 1970 Junior Final only to lose out to St Malachy’s.

Cor worked as a barman for a good few years in John Claffey’s (now known as Willies). He made the decision to emigrate to England in the mid 1970’s where he worked as a plasterer. He returned to Tyrrellspass regularly over the years and once again donned the sky blue of Tyrrellspass in the early 80’s when he played some Junior football with the club. But he returned to England again and stayed for about 10 years before returning for good in the late 1990’s.

Cor made his home in Milltownpass but he never forgot his roots in Tyrrellspass and was a great supporter of the club through the years.

The Maher family has a long association with Tyrrellspass GAA, with his father Tom, brothers Noel (RIP) and Liam and Cor has made a much valued contribution to the Sky Blues over the decades.

Cor will be fondly remembered as a great character and for being ‘as sound as a pound’. We will miss his humour and his hearty laugh.

We offer our deepest sympathies to his partner, Helen, his brothers Liam and Aidan, to his sisters, Margaret, Carmel and Mary and to the extended Maher Families, relatives and friends.

May his gentle soul rest in peace
